Temporary Adjustment to Laureate Court Rental Eligibility
Effective November 1, 2025
What’s changing
To keep housing access fair during the current hiring freeze, Employee Housing will temporarily suspend the two-year maximum UCSC employment requirement for Laureate Court rentals. This adjustment is intended to prevent the freeze from unfairly blocking otherwise qualified employees from joining the Laureate Court applicant pool. Suspending the two-year employment rule broadens access to available rentals without changing other program standards.
During this period, Employee Housing will continue to prioritize offers to any newly hired employees when appropriate to support recruitment and onboarding needs.
What stays the same
All other eligibility criteria remain in effect, including:
- 100% time appointment.
- Renters are allowed only one term of residence.
- Rental terms can last up to three years of consecutive residence.
- Waitlist procedures (timestamp order, bedroom-size fit, and standard prioritization rules) do not change.
Effective period
- This temporary suspension applies for the duration of the hiring freeze and will be reviewed upon its conclusion and annually for the foreseeable future.
- If the freeze is extended or lifted, updates will be communicated promptly.
How to apply
- Submit your application to the Employee Housing Office online at https://financial.ucsc.edu/Pages/WF_RECS_Employee_Housing_Waitlist_App.aspx.
- Respond quickly to any unit offers and documentation requests to avoid delays.
Objective
The objective of the rental-housing program is to support the academic mission and provide a “landing pad,” or transitional housing, for new UCSC employees.
Elgibility
The Housing Access Policy outlines eligibility requirements for renting.
University employees at 100% employment are eligible to apply for the program, for up to two years from their original hire date. After renting a home, it is expected that the employee will remain at full-time status. At minimum, the employee must be employed at least 50 percent time to continue to be eligible.
13 Laureate Court rental apartments are designated for eligible employees who meet income restrictions as set forth by the City of Santa Cruz. Economic eligibility is verified by the Housing Authority of Santa Cruz County. If you are interested in one of these units, or have questions regarding income restrictions, please email us at: employeehousing@ucsc.edu
